Identity, revealed: Personal data and (de)anonymization

Goal: In this lesson, students are introduced to how their personal data can be used to reconstruct an understanding of their identity and preferences, and to how, by reducing the information they share online, they can reduce their identity footprint.

Context: So, what does the company that owns Farmville know about you? What about Facebook? And, what about the various advertising companies that scan the web for information — about you? What’s that? Almost everything? Can entities actually identify you based on your data (not your name) alone? Tell me more!
